4 Ways to Contribute to the Hurricane Relief Efforts

September 18th, 2017 | Community Service

The devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma has been historic. Millions of Americans have had their lives forever changed by these powerful storms, and many are still without clean water, electricity, or necessities.

Harvey devastated many parts of Texas last month, including major cities like Houston, Beaumont, and Corpus Christi. More than 20 trillion gallons of water fell on the state, causing damage or destruction to nearly 200,000 homes.

In Florida, officials are still assessing the destruction caused by Irma, but the early reports estimated that more than 6 million residents lost electricity after the storm ravaged both the east and west coasts of the state.

You can contribute to the relief efforts for victims of the hurricanes in four important ways:

  1. Donate to the American Red Cross. Use the American Red Cross’s website to donate to Harvey and Irma victims. The money is tax-deductible and will go to victims and families who were impacted by the hurricane.
  2. Donate blood. The American Red Cross always needs blood to help save the lives of sick and injured patients, and the demand is even higher after Harvey and Irma. Click here to find a blood drive near you.
  3. Donate to The Greater Houston Community FoundationEstablished by Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner, the foundation has established a Harvey relief fund that connects donors with a network of nonprofits and other charitable solutions. Be on the lookout for new organizations that can specifically help Florida victims of Hurricane Irma.
  4. Volunteer for Hurricane Irma disaster relief. Because Irma caused such widespread damage throughout Florida, there is a major need for volunteers to assist with everything from debris cleanup to repairing and rebuilding damaged businesses and homes. FEMA’s website offers information and resources for anyone who wants to travel to affected parts of Florida to volunteer their time and energy towards the relief efforts.
