Tips to Safely Enjoy August's Solar Eclipse in Kentucky

In the early afternoon on August 21, a once-in-a-lifetime event will occur: a total solar eclipse. While most of the country will see most of the sun blocked out by the moon, people along the path of totality will see the eclipse in its full glory and will experience total darkness for anywhere from two to three minutes.

In Kentucky, cities such as Bowling Green, Paducah, and Hopkinsville are in the path of totality. Whether you live in those cities or are planning on driving from the Louisville or Lexington areas, it’s important to keep a few safety tips in mind to help prevent serious eyes injuries—even if you’re outside the path of totality.

  • You must wear special-purpose solar filters (eclipse glasses). Looking at the eclipse with the naked eye can cause severe eye damage and even blindness. Even dark sunglasses don’t offer the protection necessary to safely view the celestial event. Make sure your eclipse glasses are compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard and that they haven’t been scratched or damaged before the eclipse occurs.
  • Don’t look at the eclipse through a telescope, binoculars, camera lens, or any other optical device. Whether you’re looking through an optical device with your naked eye or while wearing eclipse glasses, the result will be the same: serious eye damage and possible blindness. The sun’s rays are concentrated and magnified when they pass through optical devices, putting your eyes at extreme risk.
  • Be careful on Kentucky’s highways and interstates if you’re driving during the eclipse. Don’t stop in the middle of the road to view the event. Instead, pull over in a safe location ahead of time and be sure you’re wearing eye protection when the eclipse occurs.

Nature’s plans aren’t always compatible with safe driving. Whether it’s a once-in-a-lifetime eclipse or an everyday rain shower, it’s important for drivers to exercise caution on roads throughout the Bluegrass State.
