Dealing with the insurance companies after your accident can be stressful and confusing. There are appraisals, deductibles, statements to be given, and multiple insurance adjusters to deal with. You may find yourself confronting transportation issues, missed work, and even injuries.

While we don’t recommend giving a statement or discussing the facts of the accident with the insurance companies without seeking representation by an attorney, if you do decide to handle the situation yourself here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind:

  1. Report the accident to your insurance company immediately and get a claim number.
  2. Speak to your insurance company and find out what types of coverage you have. You may be able to get into a rental vehicle while yours is fixed. You may also have Personal Injury Protection or Medical Pay coverage that will pay for any medical treatment related to the accident.
  3. Both insurance companies will want to discuss the facts with you. While you will need to speak to them, we do not recommend allowing them to record your statements, as they can only be used against you.
  4. If the at-fault driver’s insurance company is taking too long to contact you or taking too long to make a liability determination, get your property damage fixed through your own insurance company. You may have to pay a deductible up front, but if the other driver’s insurance company eventually accepts fault, they will reimburse you.
  5. Keep a written account of any conversations you have with the insurance companies and get the contact information for each person you speak to.
  6. Keep receipts and bills for any out of pocket expenses you incur, you may be entitled to reimbursement.
